Anti-racism Commitment & Land Acknowledgment

Palm Trees

At Diaspora Therapy Group, we uphold a commitment to practicing with a social justice lens, embracing a values-forward, anti-oppressive approach. We work with clients who experience systemic oppression, racial trauma, cultural marginalization, and generational trauma, recognizing that the emotional and psychological impacts of these forces are significant. We acknowledge the ways in which traditional mental health frameworks have perpetuated inequity, and we are dedicated to offering a space that centers culturally affirming, trauma-informed care.

Our Anti-Racism and Anti-Oppression Commitment

We’re privileged to hold space for clients whose experiences reflect a diversity of identities, and we honor their stories with a focus on de-centering dominant narratives. Our commitment includes continual education on power, privilege, bias, and systemic oppression, and we support our team members to explore these facets in their own lives and therapeutic work. We approach symptoms as feedback from an environment shaped by intersecting systems of oppression—including capitalism, white supremacy, ableism, heteropatriarchy—and acknowledge that many of our clients’ challenges are reasonable responses to these inequities.

Our commitment to inclusivity is reflected in our efforts to ensure all clients feel seen and respected, regardless of race, gender identity, sexual orientation, body size, religion, immigration status, or ability. We are allies to LGBTQIA+ communities, kink and sex work affirming, and offer specialized services like sex therapy.

Our Promises:

  • Engage in ongoing training to deepen our team’s awareness of power dynamics, privilege, biases, and racism, as well as to unlearn harmful frameworks.

  • Foster a space for clients to discuss racial trauma, intergenerational trauma, and systemic oppression with accountability and respect.

  • Empower our team to participate in activism and community support.

  • Prioritize inclusive hiring practices that align with our commitment to diversity.

  • Advocate for accessibility and equity in our services, therapeutic directories, and broader mental health systems.

  • Stand in solidarity with movements like Black Lives Matter, affirming that social justice is essential to mental health work.

Land Acknowledgment

We acknowledge that our practice in San Diego resides on the stolen lands of the Kumeyaay Nation. This acknowledgment is more than a gesture; it’s a call to action. We commit to ongoing learning, advocacy, and amplifying the voices of Native communities as we work to address the legacy of settler colonialism in our region. By acknowledging the Kumeyaay people’s enduring presence and history, we aim to support justice and amplify Indigenous voices in our practice and beyond.

For more information on the Kumeyaay people, their history, and ways to support their efforts, please visit the Kumeyaay Nation’s official website and the Native Land Digital project at native-land.ca.
